Kakera: A Piece of Your Life - Momoko Ando (2009)

The directorial debut of Momoko Ando, the daughter of actor and director Eiji Okuda, "Kakera: A Piece of Your Life" brings Erika Sakurazawa's manga "Love Vibes" to the screen. When Haru, a young woman whose life, and relationship with her boyfriend, seems to be going nowhere meets Riko, a "medical artist" dedicated to sculpting prosthetic limbs, she never suspects that this new friendship will lead to her life changing radically... and coming into balance. With music by former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha.

The Boxer - Shuji Terayama (1977)

Before there was Takeshi Kitano's "Kid's Return" and Shinya Tsukamoto's "Tokyo Fist" there was Shuji Terayama's "The Boxer". In 1977 the success of John G. Avildsen's and Sylvester Stallone's "Rocky" had the execs at Toei scrambling to capitalize on the popularity of boxing. They enlisted avant-garde author, poet, and filmmaker Shuji Terayama to pen a script and direct a film about young boxer (Kentaro Shimizu) being coached by a retired fighter (Bunta Sugawara). While you might say "Shuji Terayama? A mainstream boxing movie?" remember that Terayama was the man who organized a funeral in 1973 for the main character of the boxing manga "Ashita no Joe".
