"Tiger" Trailer Promises "Lost in Translation," Aussie Mumblecore Style

by Marc Saint-Cyr

This story doesn't exactly concern a Japanese film per se, but rather an Australian project that is set in Tokyo, and thus at least worth mentioning. A trailer has just been posted online for "Tiger," a film by an artists' collective known as Beaufort. Serving as writer, director and star is former model James McFay, who it seems didn't stray too far from his previous profession while making this film, as the short synopsis illustrates:

"During the winter season in Tokyo, two disillusioned models fall in love. When their stay extends, the relationship combusts."

According to both that blurb and the trailer, it seems any newcomers to the film would probably be in for a low-tech study of romantic relationships between young people as seen in works from the popular mumblecore genre daubed with hints of "Lost in Translation"-esque culture clash. I'm not terribly enthusiastic about the trailer (or mumblecore as a whole), and the level of insight into Japanese culture that the film will provide is questionable. Yet I can still see how some may become intrigued by "Tiger," which played at the Pia Film Festival and Zero Film Festival and will be released in Sydney, Australia on July 20th. Judge for yourself and view the trailer below.

Many thanks to Twitch for this story.
