Celine Dion to sing for Yukihiko Tsutsumi?

by Chris MaGee

Oh man... I remember once having a conversation with my Japanese language tutor that went something like this:

Him: "Do you like Celine Dion?"

Me: "No."

Him: "I don't understand. So many Canadians I talk to say that she sucks. That they hate her. They almost get angry about her."

I went on to explain that everyone doesn't think she sucks. Last year she sold 568,000 copies of her CD "Taking Chances", but I didn't go onto explain that that is only about 1% of the North American population, so just looking at the numbers she does suck. Hey! Majority rules, right?

So you may be asking yourself why I'm going on a rant about Celine Dion. Well, because she's going to be contributing a song to Yukihiko Tsutsumi's upcoming film "Maboroshi no Yamataikoku." After the media juggernaut that's been "20th Century Boys" Tsutsumi's "Maboroshi" will be a quiet film about an amateur historian (Sayuri Yoshinaga) and her blind husband (Naoto Takenaka) who are searching for the mythical country of Yamataikoku said to have existed in Japan during the Yayoi Period (500 BC - 300 AD).

The film actually sounds interesting, but then we find out that Dion will be heard singing a Japanese version of her song "A World to Believe In" during a scene where Yoshinaga appears briefly as Queen Himiko, the ruler of the ancient kingdom. It'll be around that time that I'll throw up.

Anyway... "Maboroshi no Yamataikoku" will be released in Japan on November 1st. Check out its official site here. Thanks to Tokyograph for the bad news.
