Nobuhiro Yamashita makes the shift to TV with "Midnight Restaurant"

by Chris MaGee

It was just a few days ago that we reported on how Oscar-nominated actress Rinko Kikuchi was making her return to television after an 8-year absence. Now word comes via Twitch that another high profile Japanese talent is going to be doing some work for TV, but this time behind the camera.

Nobuhiro Yamashita, the man who brought us such films as "Linda, Linda, Linda" and "The Matsugane Potshot Affair" will be helming episodes of Tokyo Broadcasting System's series "Midnight Restaurant". The series is based on Abe Yaro's manga "Shinya Shokudo" that chronicles the comings and goings of an all night restaurant without any kind of set menu. Instead patrons can stroll in and order whatever the may have a craving for.

Alongside Yamashita episodes of "Midnight Restaurant" will be helmed by Joji Matsuoka (Tokyo Tower: Mom and Me, and Sometimes Dad) and star talent such as Yutaka Matsushige as a yakuza boss and Kaoru Kobayashi as the head chef of the restaurant. I guess this is another example of Japan's love for food and cooking programs bleeding into film and TV.
