Last November I was very, very lucky to have a brief meeting with the grandfather of all English-language Japanese film scholarship, Donald Richie. Any of us who love Japanese cinema will have read such books as “The Japanese Film: Art and Industry” and “A Hundred Years of Japanese Film” amongst many others, and now the folks at Stone Bridge Press are publishing yet another work by this very important author.
Coming soon from Stone Bridge will be Richie’s “Viewed Sideways: Writings on Culture and Style in Contemporary Japan”, the end of a loose trilogy of collected essays which began with “A Lateral View: Essays on Culture and Style in Contemporary Japan” and “Partial Views: Essays on Contemporary Japan” (also published by Stone Bridge). No exact details on the essays that will be included in this new volume, at least not yet, but keep checking the book’s listing on Stone Bridge’s website here for additional details in the coming weeks. And if you haven’t had the chance to read any works by Richie yet then do so by checking out what other titles from him Stone Bridge has available.
