Dreamworks/ Spielberg to remake “Yomigaeri”

Last month there was word that Steven Spielberg’s Dreamworks was going to be making a 3D live action version of “Ghost in the Shell” (read our original report here) and now there’s word that Dreamworks will be remaking another popular Japanese film.

Based on a novel by Shinji Kaijo “Yomigaeri” (a.k.a: Resurrection) is the story of just that; people who have passed away years before are mysteriously reappearing without having aged since the time of their death and now in perfect health. A police inspector (played by SMAP’s Tsuyoshi Kusanagi,) returns to his hometown and joins forces with a local woman (Aoi Tachibana) to try and get to the bottom of these miraculous resurrections.

Directed by Akihiko Shiota and released in 2003 the film was a huge hit bringing in ¥2.5 billion at the Japanese box office. Dreamworks hopes they can replicate that same success and are enlisting screenwriter William Nicholson (Gladiator, Elizabeth: The Golden Age) to adapt the story with Spielberg himself possibly stepping in to direct.

Thanks to Tokyograph for the report.
