Ryôsuke Hashiguchi returns with “All Around Us”

Like a lot of people I was a big fan of Ryôsuke Hashiguchi’s 2002 film “Hush!” the story of two gay men and a straight woman who want to raise a baby together, but also like a lot of people I was puzzled when he kind of fell of the map as other Japanese directors rose to popularity in the West. Now there’s word from Jason Gray that Hashiguchi is returning with what looks like another insightful, humorous and poignant film.

Gururi no Koto (All Around Us) stars Japanese Renaissance man and basis for “Tokyo Tower: Me, Mom, and Sometimes Dad” Lily Franky as a courtroom sketch artist and Kimura Tae (Kaidan, The Sinking of Japan) as his wife. The ups and downs of their decade long marriage are framed by semi-fictional court cases that Franky’s character covers (a sarin gas attack, a school massacre, etc.).

Set for release in Japanese theatres on June 7th we can only hope that we’ll see a festival slot or DVD release of this film here.
