This ain’t no wooden duck decoy…

by Chris MaGee

During his retirement my Dad took up woodcarving to keep his hands and mind busy (much to my Mom’s chagrin). Mostly he whittled wildlife and a whole lot of hillbilly jug bands, but dear old Dad never ever produced something like this… Patrick Macias has posted some examples of the work of master carver Akira Ibaraki at his blog and let me just say that these ain’t no wooden duck decoys!

Ibaraki has designed and supervised the creation of three hand carved wooden sculptures of Godzilla, King Ghidorah and Mothra for the M-Arts Company. For any rabid fans of kaiju films these figures are a must, each of them being astoundingly detailed. Well, let me rephrase that… For any rabid RICH fans of kaiju films because these figures go for almost $3,000.00 a piece. So, if you have three large burning a hole in your pocket head on over to Maruione.jp to check out all of Ibaraki-san’s carvings (the Buddhist deities are absolutely beautiful too!)
