Tomorowo Taguchi returns to the director's chair for “Shikisoku Generation”

by Chris MaGee

Tomorowo Taguchi is probably the most intriguing actor working in Japanese cinema today. Taking the skills that he learned in the experimental theatre and his punk band Bachikaburi he’s gone on to play small roles in high profile box office blockbusters and award winners like “Climber’s High”, “Tokyo Tower” and “Gohatto (Taboo)” and then shift gears and star in truly cutting edge low budget indie films like “Bastoni: The Stick Handlers”, “Tokyo Trash Baby” and “Who’s Camus Anyway?” And the list of directors he’s worked with is astounding: Nagisa Oshima, Shinya Tsukamoto, Yoichi Sai, Shohei Imamura, Takashi Miike, etc. Something from these masters must have rubbed of on Taguchi because he’s already directed one film, “Iden & Tity” in 2003 based on a manga by Japanese counterculture guru, Jun Miura.

Now there’s word today at both Tokyograph and at Ryuganji.net that Taguchi will be directing his sophomore film, and once again it’s an adaptation of a Jun Miura work. Filming has just begun on “Shikisoku Generation”, a loosely autobiographical story based on Miura’s life about a teenaged boy growing up in the 1970’s who dreams of escaping his stifling life living with his parents and ends up taking off for what he believes will be a summer of sun, sea and sex on the Oki Islands just off the northern coast of Honshu.

No lead actor has been announced yet, but Lily Franky (All Around Us, Blind Beast vs. Killer Dwarf) will star as the boy’s father and former teen idol Hori Chiemi will play the part of the mother. Screenwriting duties are being taken up by Mukai Kosuke who’s probably best known for scripting “Linda, Linda, Linda”.

“Shikisoku Generation” is set for release sometime next year.
