Shun Oguri's directorial debut "Surely Someday" opens the 20th annual Yubari Film Fest

It was back at the June beginning of June that we reported on how 27-year-old actor, and star of such films as Takashi Miike's "Crows Zero" and Hiroyuki Nakano's "Tajomaru", Shun Oguri was stepping behind the camera to make his directorial debut. That was six long months ago and now Oguri's debut feature film with him calling the creative shots, "Surely Someday", will be making its world premiere at the upcoming 20th annual Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival. the film follows a group of high school boys who... wait for it... decide to form a band! Geez! How many forming band movies can Japan churn out? Okay, I digress... These boys form a band, but when the school decides to cancel its talent night the group take matters into their own hands and fake a bomb threat to convince the principal to keep talent night on. Oooo-kay.....

Despite any lapses in narrative logic the Yubari folks are proud to have "Surely Someday" open the 20th anniversary of their fest along with other Japanese films as Tomoyuki Furumaya‘s high school girl kendo romp "Bushido Sixteen", Izuru Narushima's medical drama "Kokou no Mesu", and Hitoshi Yazaki's marriage on the rocks story "Sweet Little Lies". Add to that such Hollywood films as critical darling "The Hurt Locker", and the Matt Damon star vehicle "Green Zone" and it looks like this year's Yubari will be pretty impressive... as long as a high school band shuts it down with a fake bomb threat.
