With Toei's "Tensou Sentai Goseiger vs. Shinkenger: Epic on Ginmaku" ranking as one of Japan's top ten box office earners for three weeks straight now you'd know that the now 34-film strong Super Sentai series will be going on to number 35 and beyond. With TV Asahi premiering "Himitsu Sentai Goranger" in 1975 they, Toei Studios and Bandai Visual have managed to dream up adventures for the quintet of coloured jump suit heroes including adapting the superhero team into the 1990's U.S. series "The Power Rangers". With the 35th film in the series, "Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger", due out in Japanese theatres next week where will this seminal tokusatsu series go next? According to Tokyograph Toei will be bringing the whole Super Sentai team back for their 36th film this coming May... and when we say the whole Super Sentai Team we mean the whole Super Sentai team!
This upcoming film, titled "Gokaiger Goseiger Super Sentai 199 Hero Daikessen", will feature the members of the Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger team who, above and beyond their high-kicking martial arts skills, have the ability to shape-shift into any member of the previous Super Sentai teams. That means that Toei execs will be bringing all 199 previous Super Sentai members to the screen in one massive tokusatsu action film. For those of you who are worried that it'll take superhuman movie-watching skills to keep track of 199 heroes on screen at once, you don;t have to worry. The producers are letting us know now that not all 199 heroes will be on screen at one time in "Super Sentai 199"... but that didn't stop Toei from assembling the whole gang for the above promo photo (courtesy of Eiga.com). Even us old codgers get a twinge of excitement looking at that much potential tokusatsu madness.
"Gokaiger Goseiger Super Sentai 199 Hero Daikessen" is due to be released in Japanese theatres on May 21st.
