Kitano’s next “Achilles and the Tortoise”

Jason Gray broke the story of Takeshi Kitano’s next film about a month ago, but now Variety Asia Online and Mark Schilling have delivered the full bag of goodies. Kitano’s next film will be titled “Achilles to Kame (Achilles and the Tortoise)” and, as Jason had reported earlier, will follow the life of a “talentless-but-dedicated artist” who regardless of his lack of success keeps putting brush to canvas. Kanako Higuchi (Crying Out Love, in the Center of the World, Casshern) will star as Kitano’s supportive wife along with Yurei Yanagi, who starred in “Boiling Point”, and Kumiko Aso will play younger versions of Kitano and his wife.

This looks like the return of Kitano’s paintings featured so prominently in his Golden Lion winning “Hana-Bi”. "I thought 'why not use them in a movie?’" Kitano commented. Like “Hana-Bi” Kitano is eyeing a fall release for “Achilles and the Tortoise” to coincide with this year’s Venice Film Festival.
