Double Suicide – Masahiro Shinoda (1969) *Not work safe

18th century Japan meets the Japanese New Wave. Director Masahiro Shinoda based his film on the Monzaemon Chikamatsu bunraku puppet play, “The Love Suicides at Amijima” and in telling the tale of Jihei, a poor paper merchant who falls in love and wants to redeem a courtesan, Koharu, kept aspects of the bunraku theatre intact (most notably the black clad kuroko puppeteers) creating a surreal and haunting experience.
