Details and teaser of Tomoyuki Takimoto’s “Ikigami”

I had noted that Tomoyuki Takimoto’s manga adaptation “Ikigami” was going to be one of the Japanese films being brought to market at this year’s Cannes International Film Festival, but at that time I didn’t have many details. Now on the eve of the fest there are details aplenty plus a teaser trailer for the film care of the folks at Nippon Cinema.

Based on the manga by Motoro Mase the film puts us into a near future Japan where, in order to motivate people to be better worker bees and reduce the risk of them killing themselves the government has put into effect a randomly selected death lottery for citizens between the ages of 18-24. Kengo Fujimoto, who will be played by Shota Matsuda, brother of Ryuhei Matsuda and star of Hana Yori Dango, is a government worker who although against the lottery must work as an Ikigami, the person who notifies citizens that they have been selected for execution and only have 24 hours to live.

Sounds to me like the teenage fans of Battle Royale who’ve now grown into their 20’s may click with this film, although us old codgers who are pushing 40 will think automatically see the parallels with Michael Anderson’s 1976 film “Logan’s Run”.

For more plot details and a teaser trailer that’s slick, but doesn’t reveal much head over to Nippon Cinema: http://www.nipponcinema.com/news/first_teaser_for_tomoyuki_takimotos_ikigami/
