There has been more than a little disappointment that Japan won’t be getting a higher profile at the upcoming Cannes International Film Festival with only Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s “Tokyo Sonata” being included in the Un Certain Regard programme, but now Mark Schilling and Variety Asia Online have word that with the start of this year's festival being only a little more than a week away Japanese production companies are scrambling to bring a slew of films to promote at its marketplace.
Amongst these will be the big screen manga adaptation “Ikigami: The Ultimate Limit”, which relates the tale of life in a future Japan where random individuals are selected for death. It will be directed by Tomoyuki Takimoto.
Along with “Ikigami” Japan will be represented by “A Stranger of Mine” director Kenji Uchida’s sophomore effort “After School” and promotional reels of Mamoru Oshii’s “The Sky Crawlers” and Takashi Miike’s “Yatterman”.
