Serial killers have become the vampires of the 21st century imagination: murderous creatures with superhuman intelligence and inhuman appetites, but with their image in the public’s mind now bordering on farce it’s nice to see that filmmaker Go Shibata has stepped up with a vision of a serial murderer that truly shocks and disturbs. His film 2004 “Late Bloomer” tell the story of Sumida, a severly diasbaled, wheelchair bound man who, fueled by porn, booze and a ferociously repressed sexuality, starts taking out his anger against the world he can barely participate in.
Tidepoint Pictures has picked up the North American rights to the film, so hopoefully we’ll see a DVD release of it sooner than later. For now Twitch has the English subtitled trailer; and let me say that this one really got under my skin. Can’t wait to see the full film.
Check out the official “Late Bloomer” website (in Japanese) here.
UPDATE: Well here's another reason that New York is the place to be this summer. Nicholas Rucka has word over at his blog that Tidepoint Pictures will be giving "Late Bloomer" a limited theatrical run at The Two-Boots Pioneer Theater starting Tuesday, July 25th.
