Man! First there was word that Tartan USA was closing up shop which was disappointing, but not surprising. Niche distributors don’t have an easy time of it, but I was kind of shocked by what Grady Hendrix is reporting over at Kaiju Shakedown today: Tartan UK has now closed its doors as well!
Okay to be fair this is only a rumor at the moment, but from what Grady’s source tells him that the Tartan staff showed up for work and were told the distributor was closing.
Founded by Hamish McAlpine in 1982 the UK-based company’s mandate of releasing both classic and contemporary foreign and art house films, and were one of the key players in the Asian horror boom by making the films of Shinya Tsukamoto, Takashi Shimizu and Kiyoshi Kurosawa amongst others available through their Tartan Asia Extreme wing.
If this news turns out to be true then I’m going to have a concrete excuse to drown myself in beer this weekend. Sad, sad news…
