“Dainipponjin” director to deliver a tearjerker?

by Chris MaGee

Comedian Hitoshi Matsumoto had a huge hit with his directorial debut “Dainipponjin”. Even though Magnolia secured the rights to the off the wall take on kaiju monster movies but has yet to release it through their new genre wing, Magnet, “Dainipponjin” continues to be a hit at festival after festival. Now word comes from Tokyograph that Matsumoto is working on his sophomore film.

Uraura Geinou, a Japanese entertainment gossip website has run unconfirmed reports that Matsumoto is working on a script for a “tearjerker about an unsuccessful entertainer (played by Matsumoto himself) who suddenly becomes burdened with a stranger's child,” but no other details have surfaced and the only release date being mentioned is sometime in 2009.

“An unsuccessful entertainer who suddenly becomes burdened with a stranger's child.” Can anyone else say “Kikujiro”?
