If you thought that NYAFF ’08 wasn’t amazing enough already…

by Chris MaGee

Well, Subway Cinema has updated their site, the trailer has been released and excitement is really starting to build for this year’s New York Asian Film Festival running June 20th to July 6th. For all us Japanese film cinephiles things were already looking great with “Dainipponjin”, “Sukiyaki Western Django”, “United Red Army” and “Sweet Rain: Accuracy of Death” being included in the line-up, but wait until you hear what films have been added at the 11th hour: Yudai Yamaguchi’s Kazuo Umezu adaptation “Tamami (Akanbo Shoujyo)”, Takashi Miike’s “Like a Dragon”, “The Most Beautiful Night in the World” directed by Daisuke Tengan (son of legendary filmmaker Shohei Imamura), the splatterfest “Tokyo Gore Police” starring Eihi Shiina AND Ryuichi Hiroki’s “Love on a Sunday”… plus more!

Of all those newly announced films I’d have to say that “The Most Beautiful Night in the World” and “Love on a Sunday” really have my heart pounding, but everything looks great and Grady Hendrix, Marc Walkow, Daniel Anderson Craft, Paul Kazee and everyone involved with putting this year’s fest together deserve a huge pat on the back. Cheers, Gentlemen!

Now we can only hope that some of these films make their way up to this year’s Toronto International Film Festival…
