Release date for Kazuo Umezu adaptation announced

by Chris MaGee

There had been news of Norio Tsuruta’s big screen adaptation of Kazuo Umezu’s manga “Orochi” way back in December when it was filming, but there had been no firm release dates up to this point. All that has changed now that Nippon Cinema is on the case. Today they are reporting that “Orochi” will hit Japanese theatres on September 20th, and they have what I can hope is only the teaser trailer for the film.

“Orochi” was first published in 1969 in Weekly Shonen Sunday (you can see some of the original artwork above) and told the story of sibling rivalry between two sisters, the successful Kazusa, and the black sheep Lisa as observed by a mysterious, ageless girl named Orochi who only sleeps ever 100 years. The film establishes the story with Orochi (played by Mitsuki Tanimura) saving Lisa from a car accident, an incident that triggers her to sleep before her usual hundred year cycle. Several decades later Orochi wakes to find Lisa caring for an ill Kazusa. The hints of what follows gives me the feeling that we’ll be getting a bit of an update of “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane”, but I guess I’ll have to wait until the fall to have my hunch confirmed.
