Hotaru no Haka (Grave of the Fireflies) – Taro Hyugaji (2008)
Akiyuki Nosaka’s novel “Hotaru no Haka (Grave of the Fireflies)” gets its third screen adaptation in Taro Hyugaji’s film being released in Japanese theatres on July 5th. Most famously retold in the animated film directed by Isao Takahata, the story follows two orphans, older brother Seito and younger sister Setsuko, as they must fend for themselves both during and after the firebombing of Kobe during WW2.
The Age of Assassins – Kihachi Okamoto (1967)
Okamoto’s late 60’s dark comedy about a young man, played by Tatsuya Nakadai, who must save himself from a group of assassins who are after a priceless diamond that was implanted into his body when he was only 8-years-old.
