The Magic Hour – Koki Mitani (2008)

Koki Mitani, director of such zany comedies as “Rajio no Jikan (Welcome Back, Mr. McDonald)” and “The Wow-Choten Hotel” delivers yet another triumph with “The Magic Hour”. When a young punk is ordered by his gangster boss to track down a legendary hitman the punk doesn’t know where to start. Unable to track down the real hitman he hires an actor to play him, a decision that leads to one hilarious situation after another. “The Magic Hour” opened at the #1 spot at the Japanese box office this past week.

A Scene at the Sea – Takeshi Kitano (1991)

The third film by Takeshi Kitano, and the first in which he took on editing duties, is a gentle story of determination that breaks with his two previous gangster films. When a deaf mute garbage man discovers an old surfboard on his daily rounds he sets himself the task of mastering surfing. With his deaf mute girlfriend at his side he endures the teasing and derision of the other surfers at the beach, but as his skill in riding the waves grows his relationship with his girlfriend begins to suffer.
