6 minutes of footage of Gondry/ Bong/ Carax’s “Tokyo!” at Twitchfilm.net

by Chris MaGee

The hype for “Tokyo!” has been going on for months now, but there has been little to know actual footage either officially released or leaked from the Michel Gondry/ Bong Joon Ho, Leos Carax triptych about Japan’s capital. As of this afternoon that’s all changed with Todd Brown at Twitch posting almost 6 minutes of footage from all three of the short films that comprise “Tokyo!”

I’ve been a bit suspicious about all this hype, but now that I see this footage I’m starting to get excited. It looks like a lot of fun. Bong’s “Shaking Tokyo” is about a hikikomori who falls in love with a pizza delivery girl seems to have Bong’s understated and strange sense of humor. Gondry’s “Interior Design” brings the directors skewed cinematic sensibilities to a woman’s fruitless search for an apaprtment in Tokyo and follows her until she turns into a piece of furniture; but of all three of the films I’m still most excited about Leos Carax’s “Merde”. As the clip shows a grotesque man who’s been living in the sewers emerges onto a busy Tokyo street and immediately starts wreaking havoc. I’ve heard that this takes the basic premise of a kaiju monster movie and tweaks it for a bit of social critique.

Don’t just sit there! Hit the link above and check out the clips!
