Well, it looks like the blockbuster success of Junya Sato’s 2005 war film “Otoko-tachi no Yamato (Men of the Yamato)” hasn’t dulled in the past three years because now Toho and TV Asahi are ready to launch their own WW2 naval picture “Manatsu no Orion”. Based on the novel "Raigeki Shindo Juukyuu-ten-go" by military author Tsukasa Ikegami it will chronicle the battle between an American destroyer and a Japanese submarine in the seas off the coast of Onkinawa near the end of the war. Apparently scenes will be shot in the US on a real WW2 era destroyer. Tetsuo Shinohara (Karaoke Terror) is set to direct and heart throb, TV star and breath mint and donut pitch-man Hiroshi Tamaki will bring his leading man good looks to the role of “the warm-hearted captain of the submarine”. Warm-hearted? Hot cocoa and foot rubs for everyone!
“Manatsu no Orion” is scheduled to storm the Japanese box office sometime in 2009.
