"Culture japonaise" this weekend at Japan Expo 2008 in Paris

by Chris MaGee

Yahoo! Singapore ran an interesting article yesterday about the 9th Annual Japan Expo taking place just outside Paris this weekend. Apparently France is the second biggest market for manga outside of Japan and it's estimated that one in two French children have read a Japanese manga, so it's not much of a stretch to hear that the expo organizers are expecting approximately 100,000 to turn out for this weekend's festivities. "Manga acts as a spearhead for Japanese pop culture," says Japan Expo organizer Cyril Grillon, "Comics open up a window onto Japan's language, its food, its fashion." so besides attendees being treated to symposiums with "Crying Freeman" creator Kazuo Koike and Go Nagai creator of "Devilman" and "Cutie Honey" they will also get a chance to take part in ikebana demonstrations, workshops on Zen and a go tournament.
