Venice Film Festival: Let’s not forget Jo Odagiri

by Chris MaGee

In all my to-ing and fro-ing online yesterday I went for the broad strokes of the announcement of the line-up at this year’s upcoming Venice International Film Festival, but I neglected one very important small detail. Well, not that the premiere of a new film by famed cinematographer and director Yu Lik-wai is a small detail, but I have to apologize for overlooking the fact that his film “Plastic City (Dangkou)” will also be in competition against the likes of Takeshi Kitano’s “Achilles and the Tortoise” and Hayao Miyazaki’s “Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea”.

So why is a Chinese, Brazilian, Hong Kong co-production news for a Japanese film blog? Because the film stars Jo Odagiri. Set in the a near-future Brazilian slum Odagiri plays the lead role of Kirin, the adopted son of a black market kingpin played by Anthony Wong. The film also co-stars Chinese actress Huang Yi.
