Ikigami - Tomoyuki Takimoto (2008)
Based on the Motoro Mase manga manga "Ikigami" thrusts us into a near future Japan where a death lottery is used to force people towards greater productivity (why don't they just try benefits and raises???). Random citizens are given "ikigami", 24 hours death notices, but unbeknownst to the government Kengo Fujimoto (Shota Matsuda), one of agents responsible for delivering the "ikigami" has his doubts about the system.
Throw Away Your Books, Rally in the Streets - Shuji Terayama (1971)
Japanese avant-garde cinema master Shuji Terayama's second film is a surreal, provocative and sometimes nightmarish (and virtually plotless) exploration of a young unemployed man and his continuing growth into adulthood... at least that's what the consensus is.
