Sabu turns to Korea and the 11th Annual Pusan Promotion Plan to get his next film made

by Chris MaGee

The man in the trenches of the Japanese film industry, Jason Gray, has got some interesting details on director Sabu’s (a.k.a. Hiroyuki Tanaka’s) next film. I hadn’t heard much about this, so I thought I’d spread the word here.

Apparently Sabu, whose other films include “Unlucky Monkey”, “The Blessing Bell” and “Monday”, has been trying to get his script “Arrested Memories” produced since early in 2007, but the project has been going in fits and starts. According to Jason the film would center around “a tough police detective develops Alzheimer’s disease but manages to keep solving cases anyway.” Interesting concept, even if it has some pretty strong echoes of Erik Van Looy’s 2003 film “The Memory of a Killer” about a hitman in Antwerp who’s beginning to suffer from Alzheimer’s while he continues to take jobs.

Well, in the report Jason’s posted on his blog today it looks like Sabu is looking to Korea for help to get his script realized. Along with Korean production company Finecut Sabu’s taking “Arrested Memories” to this year’s 11th Annual Pusan Promotion Plan market where various producers and investors meet with filmmakers like Sabu who have projects they are looking to get of the ground.

Here’s wishing Sabu luck on getting this film made. He’s a director with a really refined vision, so if anyone could make this work it’s him.

Thanks for helping to spread the word!

Arrested Memories has a lot of (sometimes sick) comedy elements, while being violent and very clever. High in Heaven is even wilder, but this needs to get made first.

I'll be in Pusan too to beat people up who don't like it!
