"Achilles and the Tortoise" gets Japanese premiere

by Chris MaGee

I was lucky enough to run into fellow blogger Jason Gray at the Midnight Madness screening of "Detroit Metal City" last week and we briefly got to compare which films we were planning to catch at TIFF. When I mentioned that I was going to be seeing Takeshi Kitano's latest film "Achilles and the Tortoise" he remarked that it hadn't even opened in Japan yet. Well, that situation has changed. Variety Japan has got details on the premiere of "Achilles and the Tortoise" premiering at the Toho Cinemas Roppongi Hills in Tokyo on Thursday. Kanako Higuchi, who plays Kitano's wife in the film, as well as Yûrei Yanagi and Kumiko Aso who play a younger versions of the couple joined Kitano for the event.

"Achilles and the Tortoise" went home empty handed from this year's Venice International Film Festival and the buzz I've been hearing so far here at TIFF has been mixed, but as Kitano himself said after the premiere of the film at Venice (and reported on in this article at CBS News.com), "I would say that in Japan my movies are not extremely successful," but then got in the dig that "In Japan they are convinced that they take any movie in Venice, but there are so many who don't admit that they sent works and were rejected."

Well, we at the Pow-Wow will be catching "Achilles and the Tortoise" today, so check back in the next couple days for our take on it.
