"Detroit Metal City" may actually have a chance to be set in Detroit

by Chris MaGee

Here's a bit of a meat and potatoes follow up to the vague answers that "Detroit Metal City" producer Yuka Higuchi and director Toshio Lee gave during their Q&A session following the international premiere of the film at this year's Midnight Madness programme.

According to Anime News Network negotiations for a remake of the split-personality rock and roll comedy are already taking place with both Hollywood and Hong Kong producers. I guess the Japanese camera crew that interviewed Pow-Wow contributing editor Matthew Hardstaff and I amongst other audience members at the screening on Friday about how we thought "DMC" would do in North America didn't have a North American theatrical release of the original film in mind. It's a pity, because I question how well this film would translate as a remake, plus it would be great to see a film that isn't horror or anime set a new precident for Japanese theatrical releases in the U.S. and Canada.

Final decisions on a "Detroit Metal City" remake(s) are apparently going to be made by the end of this year. We'll keep you updated on further developments.
