Seijun Suzuki returns with a new film "A Goldfish Of The Flame"

by Chris MaGee

At 85-years-old and suffering from severe emphyzema most people thought that Seijun Suzuki had given us his last film with 2005's "Operetta Tanuki Goten (Princess Racoon)", a surreal musical starring Ziyi Zhang and Jo Odagiri (pictured above with Suzuki). Now it looks like the veteran bad boy filmmaker is returning to the director's chair.

Covering the 4th Annual Tokyo Project Gathering, a financing and co-production market taking place between October 21st and 24th for Screen Daily Jason Gray has reported that Suzuki be helming a new film titled "A Goldfish Of The Flame". Besides that title and the wonderful surprise that the "Branded to Kill" and "Zigeunerweisen" director is planning to return to filmmaking is news enough, but rest assured we'll be posting more details of this project as soon as it comes available.

Keep in mind that while HAF and PPP have a good record of films getting made, TPG is still young and most of the projects don't get out of the starting gate. They're trying, though.

It'll be interesting to see if Suzuki himself shows up at the project presentation. The producer is old Nikkatsu director Kurahara Koretsugu, younger brother of Koreyoshi (Tokyo FILMeX retrospective this year).

The Japanese title of the project is Mitsu no Aware 『蜜のあわれ』which is an erotic literary work by Murô Saisei about the relationship between an old man and his young female goldfish (who also transforms into human form)...

Point taken, Jason. Thanks.

Almost sounds like an adult take on "Ponyo". Wild! I'm saving this for another post tomorrow and of course you'll be quoted.

Just the possibility of Suzuki giving us another film is reason enough to celebrate.

I just saw him the other night in a cameo role in 1998's "Sleepless Town". He didn't really have any lines (except whispered), but it was a pleasant surprise to see him.
