Bae Doo-Na to team up with Hirokazu Kore-eda for upcoming sci-fi fantasy

by Chris MaGee

"Still Walking" and "Nobody Knows" director Hirokazu Kore-eda has got the net buzzing today with the announcement he made at the Pusan International Film Festival about his next film project. "This new movie is about a non-human creature that behaves like a human and even falls in love with a human after it learns to communicate." A non-human creature? Kore-eda stepped out of his comfort zone once before with his 2006 jidai-geki drama "Hana" with mixed critical reception, so what sounds like a sci-fi fantasy is truly a gamble.

But who will star as this "non-human creature"? Korean actress Bae Doo-Na, that's who. Kore-eda has apparently been a fan of the "Linda, Linda, Linda" and "The Host" star for a number of years and vice versa, so both are excited to collaborate on this as yet untitled film. If this veers closer to Nicholas Roeg's "The Man Who Fell to Earth" than Spielberg's "E.T." this could actually be an interesting project.

Thanks to Twitch and Kaiju Shakedown for details on this story.

This is extremely exciting news... I"ve been a long-time fan of both Bae Doo-Na and Kore-eda (though indeed Hana was far beneath the usual level of quiet artistic quality Kore-eda usually achieves). All the same, I'm hopeful this science fiction fantasy will be marvelous. Bae Doo-Na was genius in Linda, Linda, Linda! and she was fantastic in The Host. I think Kore-eda's made an excellent and interesting choice.
