Shohei Imamura’s “Pigs and Battleships” coming from Criterion in May

by Bob Turnbull

The latest Criterion newsletter came out today with the above image as a teaser (not one of their more subtle clues for a future release...)

I think it's pretty safe to say that we'll be seeing Shohei Imamura's 1961 Blue Ribbon Award-winning film "Pigs And Battleships" as a Criterion release sometime next May. The film is a cynical look at post-war Japan dealing with remaining U.S. Forces, rampant poverty and very desperate people. One can only hope that this will not be the sole Imamura release in May, but even if it is we'll still welcome it with open arms (and wallets).
