Takeshi Kitano named as one of GQ Japan's 2008 Men of the Year

by Chris MaGee

GQ Japan has named their 2008 Men of the year and amongst those honoured with this year's title is our beloved "Beat" himslef Takeshi Kitano. It's been the best of times and the worst of times for Kitano this year. On the one hand his latest film "Achilles and the Tortoise" was panned by critics (although our Bob Turnbull really liked it), but on the other his overall career was honoured with a life time achievement award at the Moscow International Film Festival in June and an honourary Golden Alexander at the 49th Annual International Thessaloniki Film Festival in November.

Amongst the others named as GQ's Men of 2008 are ARASHI singer and "Hana Yori Dango" star Jun Matsumoto, Beijing Olympic Medalist Nobuharu Asahara, Bathing Ape creator and designer NIGO, artist Takashi Murakami and comedian Sekai no Nabeatsu. You can check out the video of the press conference with all of the honourees here.

Woohoo go Takeshi Kitano, sounds like he has had one heck of a year. I don't always 'get' his work but I do believe him to be a true artist on many fronts.
