Eiji Okuda's daughter to make directorial debut with lesbian romance

by Chris MaGee

Momoko Ando, the daughter of actor/ director Eiji Okuda (A Long Walk, Out of the Wind) originally got to help out behind the scenes on her dad's 2001 directorial debut "Shoujyo: An Adolescent", but according to a report posted today at Tokyograph the 26-year-old will now be making her own directorial debut with the same sex romance "Kakera." Based on Erica Sakurazawa's 1997 manga "Love Vibes" the film will tell the story of Haru, played by Hikari Mitsushima (above left) who meets and falls in love with Riko, a "medical artist", played by Eriko Nakamura (above right), after Haru breaks up with with her cheating boyfriend.

Apparently Ando conducted exhaustive research at Nakamura Brace, a prosthetic limb manufacturing company, to make sure that Riko's work in the film is authentic. She has also enlisted the help of former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha to compose the music for "Kakera". Japanese film buffs will remember that Iha previously scored Nobuhiro Yamashita's coming of age film "Linda, Linda, Linda".

The production of "Kakera" has met with a number of delays, but currently Ando is hard at work on the final edit of the film with an eye on having it ready to premier at this year's Cannes International Film Festival in May.
