Two Nikkatsu action films coming to DVD from Kino in May

by Chris MaGee

"No Borders, No Limits" the retrospective of Nikkatsu action films that coincided with the release of Japan Times film critic Mark Shilling's book of the same name was a huge success when it toured throughout the world in the fall of 2007 and throughout last year. (Of course it never hit Toronto, but I'm not bitter... No... I'm not bitter.) Not only did it introduce movie audiences to a genre of films rarely seen outside of Japan, but it had distributors sit up and take notice. As we reported back in July the folks at the Criterion Collection had bought up Takashi Nomura's “A Colt is My Passport” and six other films from "No Borders, No Limits" for not one, but two upcoming Eclipse box sets. As of today there's been no word as to when those will hit stores, but there is word on two other titles from the retrospective coming out very soon.

Kino International has announced that they will be releasing Seijun Suzuki's 1963 gangster flick "Detective Bureau 2-3: Go To Hell Bastards!" starring Jo Shishido and Motomu Ida's 1967 secret agent picture "3 Seconds Before Explosion" starring Akira Kobayashi on May 19th. No word on extras, but I doubt they'll be that much supplementary content on the disc. Kino has great taste with the films it picks up for release, but they don't have the best track record when it comes to assembling extras, but if we hear otherwise about these to DVDs we'll definitely let you know.

Thanks to Wildgrounds for the heads up on this.
