Who needs a new CGI "Astro Boy" when you can have a live-action one from 1959?

by Chris MaGee

Many of you know how Hong Kong-based Imagi Animation Studios ran into some financial troubles recently and had to hold up production of David Bowers' CGI feature film of Osamu Tezuka's "Astro Boy". Thankfully Imagi has overcome that hurdle and "Astro Boy" is now slated to be released on October 23rd, but after seeing this video at The Hopeless Romantic I had to ask myself what's better: a fancy CGI "Astro Boy" or a cheesy live-action one? Right now I'm leaning towards the latter. Those glue on beards and mustaches are pretty rad.

Apparently this comes from a Japanese TV series based around Tezuka's famous robot boy that ran between 1958 and 1959 and follows the Fuhrer ZZZ storyline from the original manga in which a mad genius attempts to take over the world using a poison gas that turns people into blithering idiots.

There's not a lot of other information on this series. The best place for an indepth review of it is at TarsTarkas.net here and if you want a really good laugh you can watch the rest of the eight segemnts of it here. That's what I'll be doing instead of shelling out cash to see the the upcoming CGI version.

Wow, I never knew Ed Wood worked in Japan! Not having made it to the Yatterman premiere in NY recently, this is easily the best live action anime adaptaion I've seen in quite a while. Thanks for posting this!
