Sway - Miwa Nishikawa (2006)


Hiorokazu Kore-eda protege Miwa Nishikawa's 2006 film "Sway" tells the story of the contenscious relationship between two brothers, the cool, urban Takeru (Jo Odagiri) and the simple rural Minoru (Teruyuki Kagawa) and how their lives are changed forever after a fateful day on a bridge witrh their mutual crush Chieko (Yoko Maki). Winner of muliple awards including The Blue Ribbon Award for Best Director and the Kinema Junpo Award for Best Supporting Actor for Kagawa.




Yumeji - Seijun Suzuki (1991)

The third film in "Branded to Kil Director" Seijun Suzuki's loose and surreal Taisho Trilogy "Yumeji" is based on the life of painter Yumeji Takehisa (1884-1934) as portrayed by actor and rock star Kenji Sawada (formerly of The Tigers and known for his gender-bending persona Lucy). The film follows Yumeji through relationships with his lover Hikono and his new obsession Tomoyo. If you think the theme music is familiar you're right. Hong Kong director Wong Kaw-Wai lifted it for his contemporary classic "In the Mood for Love".
