Issei Shibata's cult hit "Real Onigokko (The Chasing World)" gets the sequel treatment

by Chris MaGee

You would think with so many Japanese action films ("Hard Revenge Milly", "High Kick Girl!", "Be a Man! Samurai School" to name only a few) getting attention in North America that we would have heard about "Real Onigokko (The Chasing World)". Based on a novel by Yusuke Yamada the film takes place in an alternate reality where someone is orchestrating an elaborate game of tag, a game that is literally hunting down people with the surname Sato, the equivalent of the ubiquitous North American surname Smith. At the heart of the film is high school student Tsubasa Sato who must not only try and figure out who is behind all this, but to save his life in the process.

Directed by Issei Shibata "Real Onigokko" was a low budget, low profile action film that only opened in a single theatre in Tokyo in 2008, but it quickly became a cult hit with high school students. What happens when you have a cult hit on your hands? You chase after that cash and make a sequel, that's what, and that's exactly what's happening with "Real Onigokko".

According to Nippon Connection writer/ director Issei Shibata and star Takuya Ishida, (above) who played Tsubasa Sato in the original, have both retirned although this time out expect to see a little more money splashed around up there on the screen. Also Shohei Miura, Tomoya Warabino, Naoko Watanabe and Toshiyuki Nagashima will be coming on board to make the chase that much more interesting.

To get a better idea of what to expect when "Real Onigokko 2" hits Japanese theatres next year check out the trailer for the original "Real Onigokko" below.
