First glimpse of live-action "Space Battleship Yamato" an anime geek's wet dream

by Chris MaGee

Read the J-Film Pow-Wow blog long enough and you'll soon learn that beneath my pretentious art house film-loving exterior there is still a kid whose first exposure to Japanese film, and specifically animation, was the English-dubbed episodes of the 70's anime "Space Battleship Yamato" (renamed "Star Blazers" for us North American kiddies). While I ended up being a little bit underwhelmed by what I've seen of the animated reboot of the series, "Yamato: Rebirth" that was released in Japanese theatres in December I have to admit that the 30-second commercial spot for the upcoming live-action take on the original Yomiuri TV series makes me kind of giddy, even with Takuya Kimura's hair all poofed up. Directed by Takashi Yamazaki this ¥2 billion-budgeted "Space Battleship Yamato" follows the crew of the Space Battleship Yamato - Susumu Kodai (Kimura), Yuki Mori (Meisa Kuroki), and Captain Juzo Okita (Tsutomu Yamazaki above) - on yet another intergalatic adventure. To check out the commercial, and hopefully get that same giddy feeling (if you're in your mid to late 30's and are in a state of arrested adolescence like myself) then head over to Nippon Cinema to get your geek fix. "We're off to outer space... We're leaving mother earth..."
