by Chris MaGeeOkay, when I originally watched Kwak Jae-yong's "Cyborg She" starring Haruka Ayase as a time traveling cybernetic girlfriend I thought, "That's probably one of the stupidest sci-fi/ time travel films I've ever seen," and not stupid in a good way either. A post over at Tokyograph this week announcing an upcoming film titled "Chonmage Purin (Topknot Pudding)" may top "Cyborg She" in the bad sci-fi/ time travel film category.
Directed by Yoshihiro Nakamura (Fish Story, The Glorious Team Batista) and based on a novel by author Gen Araki "Chonmage Purin" will attempt to combine to mainstays of Japanese television - the period set taiga dramas full of samurai and intrigue... and cooking shows... and time travel. Really. Starring Ryo Nishikido (above right) and Rie Tomosaka (above left) the film will follow a samurai named Yasube living in Edo who somehow travels through time to present day Tokyo. Here he meets a single mother and her young son and somehow this meeting inspires him to become a pastry chef. Yes, you heard that right... a pastry chef. I mean, a sushi chef I could see because he could whip his katana out and slice up some nice sashimi, but...
Another indicator of just how mind-bogglingly bad this film may turn out to be the Tokyograph report feels it necessary to mention that Nishikido has been undergoing pastry chef training and that, "He will appear with various hairstyles in the film..." Gee, that makes all the difference! Maybe it's going to be a good movie after all!
"Chonmage Purin" is set to begin filming this week and be released in Japanese theatres this summer.

I'll follow Nakamura anywhere, but this film has a definite aroma wafting about it, and it ain't good.
