Sad news came this past week for all fans of retro 70s tokusatsu TV series. Actor Shunsuke Ikeda, best known for his role as the android Ichiro, a.k.a Kikaider 01, in the TV Asahi series "Kikaider 01", passed away on June 11th after a long battle with stomach cancer. He was 69.
Ikeda, whose real name was Norio Ikeda, was born into show business in 1941 in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture. His father Tatsuo Ouchi was a swordfight choreographer for various jidaigeki and chanbara films, and one can only surmise that his father's action background affected Ikeda's choice of roles in later life. His role on "Kikaider 01" had him battling a trio of evil androids, Red Hakaider, Blue Hakaider, and Silver Hakaider, bent on domination and destruction. Besides his role on that series Ikeda also starred in other action/ tokusatsu series in the 1970s such as "Kaette Kita Ultraman" and "Himitsu Sentai Goranger".
Our deepest condolences go out to Ikeda-san's family and friends at this time. Our thanks go to Anime News Network for the details of his life. Now let's remember Shunsuke Ikeda and his best known role as the super android Kikaider 01.
