Weinsteins to remake “Seven Samurai”

I’d heard about this before, but I’d tried to forget about it. Now Harry Knowles of Aintitcool.com and Variety have reminded me of this heinous act. Gee thanks, Harry!

We’ve had news of remakes of “Ghost in the Shell”, “Akira”, “The Hidden Fortress” and a restart of the Zatoichi series with Haruka Ayase as the blind swordswoman in the past little while, but all those pale in comparison to this: Bob and Harvey Weinstein are planning a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s “The Seven Samurai”. Apparently an unnamed director is in talks to get behind the camera.

Okay, amongst the gasps and groans I hear some folks saying, “Yeah, but it was remade into “The Magnificent Seven” and that wasn’t so shabby”. Understood, but with this coming from the Weinsteins who’ve had a history of buying up Asian and other foreign films only to lock them away and do nothing with them… Well, it doesn’t inspire a hell of a lot of hope.

All I have to say is that let’s pray to the good lord above that Bob and Harvey don’t hook up with director Jim Sheridan for that oft-rumoured remake of Kurosawa’s “Ikiru”. The day that happens is the day I up my meds.

Check out all the details about the remake and the other titles to be produced by the Weinstein Company’s “Asian Film Fund” at Aintitcool.com (and a link to the Variety article as well): http://www.aintitcool.com/node/36410
