Goro Miyazaki and Hideaki Anno weigh in on “The Sky Crawlers”

by Chris MaGee

Today Ghibli World is running the reactions of both Goro Miyazaki (Tales from Earthsea) and Hideaki Anno (Neon Genesis Evangelion) to their fellow anime brother-in-arms Mamoru Oshii’s upcoming film “The Sky Crawlers”. The two directors comments have been posted at the “Sky Crawlers” official site and range from positive to pitiful. The younger Miyazaki doesn’t seem convinced saying the characters, “rode on airplanes and motorbikes,” but that they, “seemed like unsubstantial machines on the monitor display. Even those machines seemed to pretend being machines.” Meanwhile Anno was a bit more kind commenting, “Its air battle scenes are long and very good,” but he also added, “This is Oshii's first film during which I didn't fall asleep halfway.” Now, now, boys! Play nice!
