Tidepoint Pictures secures rights for “Electric Button (Moon and Cherry)” and “Dear Pyongyang”

by Chris MaGee

While it doesn’t have an extensive roster of films Tidepoint Pictures is probably one of the most exciting distributors of Asian films in North America. Their catalogue juxtaposes popular genre films like Takashi Miike’s “Dead or Alive” and Higuchinsky’s “Uzumaki” with arthouse efforts by Masahi Yamamoto, Yutaka Tsuchiya and Kazuo Hara. Now there’s word that they’ve secured the North American distribution rights to two more Japanese films that deserve a higher profile.

“Electric Button” the North American re-title of Yuki Tanada’s 2005 film “Moon and Cherry” is the story of Tadokoro, a student who joins his university’s erotic creative writing club only to encounter Mayama, a gifted writer and experienced lover who takes the inexperienced boy under her wing and in the process uses their liaisons as fodder for her new serialized novel. Co-founder of Midnight Eye, Tom Mes, named this as one of his favorite films of 2005, calling it “The pleasant surprise of the year. Fresh, frank and funny.”

“Dear Pyongyang” is the debut documentary feature by zainichi (ethnic) Korean filmmaker Yang Yonghi about her coming to terms with her father, a staunch communist who sent his three sons back to North Korea as part of a repatriation program by a pro-North Korean zainichi organization. Winner of the Swarovzki Trophy at the Asian First Film Festival and the Special Jury Prize World Cinema/ Docuemntary at the sundance Film Festival.

There are no set DVD release dates for either title yet, but “Dear Pyongyang will be seeing a limited theatrical run in September or October.
