Was poking around online today and came across what appears to be a very interesting documentary scheduled for release in Japan on July 5th. “Half Empty or Half Full” follows director Kayo Takefuji as she visits veteran documentary filmmaker Tatsuji Yamagishi. With his wife having already passed away, no children, and his role in documenting both the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and the 1970 Japan Expo largely forgotten Yamagishi lives a lonely existence in a long term care facility, his left side paralyzed by a debilitating stroke. Takefuji films their visits and then, with Yamagishi’s input, recreates episodes of his life, giving us a full portrait of this once important filmmaker.
This is Kayo Takefuji’s directing debut, having previously worked with award winning filmmaker Naomi Kawase as an editor on her 2006 documentary “Birth/ Mother” that chronicled Kawase’s pregnancy and birth of her first child.
The official trailer (below) is really intriguing despite some of the mangled English subtitling, and although “Half Empty or Half Full” had its international premiere at this year’s Rotterdam International Film Festival there doesn’t seem to be any plans for a Canadian or North American screening… yet.
