Do you ever find yourself getting tired of just sitting around and watching films from Japan? Well, now’s your chance to be a part of a fantastic Japanese cultural event right here in Toronto. Next Friday and Saturday, June 27th and 28th the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre and the Gujo Odori Toronto Committee are bringing a 420 year-old festival to our hometown!
Starting in Gujo Hachiman, Gifu Prefecture in the late 16th century the Gujo Odori is one of the three most important Japanese dance festivals and has been designated as “a significant intangible folk cultural asset” by the Japanese government. Described as a “dance to be danced, not viewed” it will be fun for everyone.
Two separate venues will be involved in the event. Friday’s dance will take place between 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm in front of Metro Hall (at Queen and John) and Saturday’s dance will be held at The Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre in Don Mills, again between 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm. At both events you will be able to join in with over 70 musicians and dancers from Japan as well as browse the vendors market and sample delicious food. What’s best about the event though it that IT’S FREE!
Check out more details of Toronto’s Gujo Odori festivities here and here and we’ll hopefully see you there next weekend!
