Yuichi Kimura to direct “Nisesatsu (Counterfeit Money)”

by Chris MaGee

Yuichi Kimura falls neatly into the “I know that guy!” category of actors. He’s played a number of supporting roles in films like Hirokazu Koreeda’s “Nobody Knows” and “Hana”, Nobuhiro Yamashita’s “Matsugane Potshot Affair” and in the upcoming punk rock comedy “Shonen Meriken Sakku” directed by Kankuro Kudo. (As an aside Kimura is also an accomplished chef who’s published two cookbooks in Japan!) And even though he will be playing another supporting role in his next onscreen appearance he’ll be running the show behind the camera.

Tokyograph is reporting that Kimura will be making his feature film directing debut with a film called “Nisesatsu (Counterfeit Money)” about a counterfeiting ring that was active in Yamanashi Prefecture just after the end of WW2. Veteran actress Mitsuko Baisho (Vengeance is Mine, Kagemusha) will star as a high school vice principal who, although not involved in the counterfeiting ring, becomes a material witness to the crime. Kimura will be playing one of the criminals involved in the scam.

“Nisesatsu” should be hitting theatres in 2009.
