For those of you who have seen the wonderful documentary "The Cats of Mirikitani" directed by Linda Hattendorf about Japanese-American artist Tsutomu "Jimmy" Mirikitani then you may be interested to know that today, June 15th is Jimmy's 88th birthday! A special party was held down in New York City to celebrate his landmark 88th year, which in Japan is known as "beiju" since the Japanese characters for “88,” when written together, resemble the character for “rice” (the character "rice" can read as bei).
Omadeto O-tanjobi, sensei!
And for those unfortunates who have not seen (or heard of) "The Cats of Mirikitani check out my review for it here and my interview with its director Linda Hattendorf here.
