"9 Souls" is one of my top ten all time favorite Japanese films and its director Toshiaki Toyoda is for my money one of the most exciting young voices in Japanese cinema in the past decade, but in what I find a really sad update at Nippon Cinema the closest thing us fans of Toyoda will be getting that is even close to cinematic will be a video and light show for the Japanese band Twin Tail.
After the director ran afoul of the Japanese authorities for being arrested for possession of just under 4 grams of an illegal stimulant (cocaine? meth?) back in the summer of 2005 his career has been in a nose dive. The arrest and subsequent suspended sentence nearly got his last film "Hanging Garden" locked out of Japanese theatres and in the years since it seems that its been nearly impossible for him to get a break.
Now as much as I may rag on Hollywood for being predictable, formulaic, and creatively bankcrupt one thing that it does excel at is forgiveness, especially for one measly drug bust. You have directors like Oliver Stone who's adventures using various mind altering substances are legendary, but who are still working... and need I even mention the astounding talented yet troubled Robert Downey Jr.?
Well, follow the link above for more details and to check out what really is a good performance by Twin Tail. Now I just hope someone in the Japanese film industry takes some cues from Hollywood for once and gets Toyoda back in the director's chair soon.
